The Changing Degree of Activity of Daily Living Performance Ability After Occupational Therapy Intervention With Stroke Patients Above 65 Years Old Age

ABSTRACT

Objective : The purpose of this study is to show the effect of occupational therapy intervention with stroke patients above 65 years old. The subjects of this study were two hundred eighty eight patients received Occupational therapy(OT) intervention in department of rehabilitation medicine with stroke at A Hospital in Su-Won City, Kyung-gi Province.Methods : The methods of this study were to conduct retrospective study through a chart review. We surveyed about sex, the age of attack, diagnosis, etiology, numbers of attack, period of treatment, educational level and compared with MMSE and MBI scoring at starting and final time of treatment. MBI score ranged from zero to eighty excepting bladder and bowl subitems because of not enough informationThe changing degree of activity of daily living(ADL) performance ability before and after occu-pational therapy intervention were measured by paired t-test technique and the changing score among groups of age, peroid of treatment, MMSE total score were analyzed by using One-Way ANOVA techniqueResults : First, MBI total score was improved 23.07±19.92 than compare with 20.12±20.34 before OT intervention(P<0.001). Also, All sub-items score of MBI were improved significantly, espe-cially locomotion(gait) was 5.52±5.44(P<0.001), transfer to chair/bed was 4.59±4.82(P<0.001), dressing upper and lower body was 3.27±3.38(P<0.001), toileting was 3.24±3.76(P<0.001).The higher MMSE score, the higher MBI score(p<0.001)Conclusion : MBI total score and All sub-items score of MBI were improved after OT inter-vention compared with before intervention. This conclusion shows that OT intervention can be presented one of the effective rehabilitation program and basic report in OT parts to improve of ADL performance ability to above 65 years old age with stroke patients
