Snoezelen Room’s Therapeutic Effects on Self-stimulatory Behavior in Children With Profound Mental Retardation

ABSTRACT

Objective : This paper describes the therapeutic application of a snoezelen(multisensory) room for children with profound mental retardation in the Republic of Korea and theoretical, and operational issues.Methods : The subjects of this study were 2 profound mental retarded children. One was 11 aged. The other was 13 aged. Two single subject researches were proceeded. The baseline data was measured in the department of Occupational Therapy. The treatment data was measured in the snoezelen room. The results were presented by table, graph and visually analyzed.Results : The self-stimulatory behaviors got smaller in the treatment phase than the baseline. There was decreasing tendency of the self-stimulatory behaviors that the treatment sessions continued.Conclusion : This study showed the therapeutic effects of snoezelen room on the reduction of self-stimulatory behaviors in children with profound mental retardation.
