ABSTRACT

Objective : The aim of this study was to introduce a home-based cognitive rehabilitation program model and report on its clinical effectiveness. Methods : This study was conducted based on 6 stoke patients who did not receive regular cognitive re-habilitation intervention for more than 6 months, after suffer a brain injury between June and December, 2005. The home-based cognitive rehabilitation program model consists of 4 areas: a general guideline, sys-tematic cognitive workbook, cognitive exercises, and activities of daily living. Two specialized occupational therapists intervened on behalf of the 6 patients, along with selected family members, through regular coun-selling and systematic monitoring for 12 weeks. Cognitive function, ADL, and IADL were rated using LOTCA, MBI, and S-IADL, respectively. Results : Using a Wilcoxon signed rank test as non-parametric statistics, LOTCA and S-IADL showed a significant increase (p<.05) after application of the home-based cognitive rehabilitation program. However, the increase in MBI was not significant. Conclusion : This study demonstrates that a home-based cognitive rehabilitation program model helps stoke patients in terms of cognitive function and IADL improvement.
