The Correlation between the Value of Play of Choice for School Age Children

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between the value of the play and play of choice for school age children in Korea. Method : From October 19 to October 20 in 2007, three researchers randomly selected 204 school age children (4th to 6th grade) in Gyeong-nam, Gimhae city, and analyzed them. Analysis of the data was done using ANOVA and a correlation analysis. Results : The results of the research are as follows: For the frequency of a child's play of choice, playing a computer took was first with 139, and watching TV was in second with 117. The values of play the children received appears as follows: emotional value (20.0 ± 3.53), social value (17.2 ± 4.08), physical value (15.3 ± 3.81), and cognitive value (13.7 ± 4.77). For the results of play of choice, the values of playing differ in accordance with the child's sex, type of house, and number of academies attended. In the relationships between value of play and play of choice, significant differences appear between soccer and physical value, drawing pictures and cognitive value, reading comic books and emotional value, cognitive value. Conclusions : In this research, we assumed that there is a relationship between value of play and play of choice. By the results in relationships between value of play and play of choice, there appeared a significant difference in the areas of soccer and physical value, drawing pictures and cognitive value, reading comic books and emotional value, cognitive value. Thus, the result of this research will be useful in showing the relationship between significant elements of elementary school student's playing value, value of play, and play of choice.
