The Effects of Cognitive Training of Integrated Psychological Therapy in Persons With Chronic Schizophrenia by Assessing Cognitive Function and Activities of Daily Living Performance Ability Improvement

ABSTRACT

Objective : The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of cognitive training of Integrated Psychological Therapy on cognitive function and activities of daily living performance ability in persons with chronic schizophrenia. Methods : Nineteen subjects who were diagnosed with chronic schizophrenia participated in this study. As an intervention, the cognitive training of Integrated Psychological Therapy was conducted three times per week during six-week period, eighteen times in total. The design of this study was pre-test and post-test study. To ascertain whether this program could improve the cognitive function, Trail Making Test as executive function assessment, Word List Memory Test, and thinking operation sub-test of Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment were used. Results : Executive function(p<.01), memory(p<.01), and thinking operation(p<.01) in cognitive abilities demonstrated significant improvement. In changes of activities of daily living performance ability, there were significant improvements in motor(p<.05) and process(p<.01) skills. Conclusion : The cognitive training of Integrated Psychological Therapy in this study have been positive effects on cognitive ability and performance ability in activities of daily living. For the further study, researchers need to consider control group experimental study of persons with schizophrenia and verification research whether these improvements remain.
