Effect of the Vocational Rehabilitation Program for Intellectual Disabilities : Systematic Review

ABSTRACT

Objective : The purpose of this study was to provide basic data on the vocational rehabilitation intervention strategies for occupational therapists in Korea by systematically analyzing the types and effects of vocational rehabilitation programs for people with intellectual disabilities. Methods : Previous studies were found from an electronic database; RISS and Google Scholar database published between 2007 to 2016. The key terms were 'Vocational Rehabilitation Program and Intellectual Disabilities', 'Employ program and Intellectual Disabilities'. A total of 7 articles were used in this analysis. Results : Types of vocational rehabilitation programs included learning skills training, vocational training, ADL/IADL training, and virtual reality training. The intervention was conducted in a vocational rehabilitation center (62.5%), a sheltered workshops(12.5%), a special school(12.5%) and a virtual reality center(12.5%). As a result of the intervention, concentration, job generalization, job maintenance, behavior control, self–determination, independence were improved and employment rate increased. Conclusion : This study was to identify the vocational rehabilitation program and the effects of the intellectual disability to improve the professionalism and quality of occupational therapy services in vocational rehabilitation. In the future, the roles of occupational therapists should be clarified in the field of vocational rehabilitation and various vocational rehabilitation interventions should be made.
