ABSTRACT
Objective : This study examined the home-based rehabilitation needs and related factors based on occupational performance in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Methods : We surveyed 40 patients and 40 caregivers who underwent occupational therapy at five hospitals in Chungbuk, Korea. Home-based rehabilitation needs were assessed using an instrument based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health and Occupational Therapy Practice Framework. Additionally, patients were assessed for psychological and quality-of-life factors. Results : The home rehabilitation needs of both patients and caregivers were above-normal, and they had higher demands for exercise, healthcare, and environmental factors. Needs differed by age and education in patients, and by sex, caregiving time, and treatment costs in caregivers. In the regression analyses, patients’ systemic symptoms and emotional and social quality of life were significant predictors, whereas family support, caregiver burden, and general quality of life were significant predictors for caregivers. Conclusion : This study is meaningful in that it provided basic data for the development of home-based rehabilitation programs for the future by presenting the rehabilitation needs of Parkinson’s disease patients and caregivers and related factors.
